after connecting with Jurado cross.
A single goal from Diego Forlán gave Atlético Madrid a slim lead to take in to next week's semi-final second leg at Anfield. The Uruguayan striker opened the scoring in the ninth minute, beating Reina at the second attempt after failing to connect properly with Jurado's cross. Gerard fired a shot just wide in reply, but after the restart Quique's side could have added to their lead, Forlán wasting a good chance and Reina having to save from Simao and Ujfalusi. With Agüero back from suspension for the return, and Fernando Torres still out after a knee operation, Atleti must now be favourites to reach their second final this season, especially as well as they will not have to face the gruelling road journey that Rafa Benítez's side had to endure due to the airspace closure.
