Villarreal came in to the last group game knowing they were already qualified for the first knock-out round, but needing a good result against leaders Salzburg to overtake them in the table. In the end though the Austrian side made it six straight wins after Svento beat Oliva in the sixth minute. Nilmar brought a good save out of Gustafsson and Escudero curled a corner on to the crossbar after the restart, but Valverde's side couldn't prevent a first European home defeat in three years.
