Villarreal were hoping to compensate for their poor start in the league with a successful European campaign, but even that has started to go off the rails after a 2-0 defeat at Salzburg. Gustafsson kept out an early shot from Rossi before Janko got on the end of Leitgeb's free kick to give the Austrian side the lead. Cani and Nilmar tested the keeper again either side of half time, but with the game coming to an end, Tchoyi beat Diego López from a wide angle to leave Ernesto Valverde's side down in third place in their group.
