Spain reached the finals of this season's European championships against all odds after a 2-0 win over Poland in the last group match. A defeat against Belgium in the second game meant their chances of qualifying were slim, but in the end hosts Northern Ireland did them a big favour by beating Belgium 1-0 in the other group game. That meant a three way tie, and Ginés Meléndez's side went through thanks to a better goal difference. Both goals against Poland were scored by Valencia's Paco, the first in only the third minute and the second late on from the penalty spot.
