Atlético Madrid beat Fulham 2-1 in extra time to win the first ever Europa League final and to take their first European title in 48 years! Diego Forlán hit the post and Reyes brought a good save out of Schwarzer before Forlán redirected a wayward shot from Agúero past the keeper on the half hour mark. Just five minutes later though Simon Davies swept a shot past De Gea after Assunçao could only head back Gera's cross, and after an hour of end to end football the game went in to the added half hour. It looked as if things were heading for a penalty shoot out, but with four minutes to go Agüero managed to keep the ball in down the left wing, and he swung a cross over which Forlán flicked on past the keeper with a little help from Hangeland. A great shame for Roy Hodgson's side, who had battled through to the final against all odds, but it was Atlético and their fans who will be celebrating in the Plaza Neptuno in Madrid over the next couple of days. They mustn't use up all their energy though - they have another final in seven days' time! (12.05.10)
