Spain reached the finals of this season's European championships against all odds after a 2-0 win over Poland in the last group match. A defeat against Belgium in the second game meant their chances of qualifying were slim, but in the end hosts Northern Ireland did them a big favour by beating Belgium 1-0 in the other group game. That meant a three way tie, and Ginés Meléndez's side went through thanks to a better goal difference. Both goals against Poland were scored by Valencia's Paco, the first in only the third minute and the second late on from the penalty spot. (22.03.10)
Spain's chances of qualifying for this season's under 17 European finals in Liechtenstein are hanging by a thread after a 0-1 defeat to Belgium. Ginés Meléndez's side got off to a great start in their Elite Group, beating hosts Northern Ireland 0-4 with two each by Málaga's Juanmi and Valencia's Paco, but they now have to win their last match on Monday against Poland and hope that Belgium lose to Northern Ireland in the other group game.
