Europa League, round of 16, first leg

Spain's two remaining representatives in the Europa League could only draw at home on Thursday evening, and both will have uphill battles to remain in the competition in next week's second legs. Atlético Madrid were held to a scoreless draw by Sporting Lisbon, who played for an hour with ten men after Grimi was sent off for a second bookable offence. The closest anyone came to scoring was when Liedson hit the bar early on, and the Portuguese side ended with nine men when Tonel was also sent off near the end. And Valencia drew 1-1 against Werder Bremen, with Mata equalising in the second half after Frings had given the German side the lead from the penalty spot midway through the first half. The Chés were relatively happy with the result though after Banega was sent off just a few minutes after the restart. (11.03.10)
