Spain's under 21 side dropped their first points in the European qualifiers after losing 2-1 to Holland on Tuesday evening. An at-times physical Dutch side took the lead with just under a quarter of an hour gone when Falkenburg steered a shot past Asenjo after the keeper could only push out Wijnaldum's cross. Dani Parejo and Jordi Alba both hit the post before the break, but Holland went further ahead when Wijnaldum guided a header wide of Asenjo after a good run by John down the left wing. Azpilicueta got one back in the second half however from Dani Parejo's pass, and Spain came close to saving a draw when Diego Capel and Javi Martínez both hit the woodwork again late on. (17.11.09)
Spain were drawn in qualifying group 8 for this season's edition together with Macedonia, Wales and Portugal, the mini-tournament taking place in the Valencia region. Wins in the first two matches saw them through to the Elite round, although a defeat in the last fixture against Portugal meant they only finished second in their group. (08.11.09)
Spain finished third in the competition after they were beaten by Nigeria in the semi-finals. Ginés Meléndez's side had finished top of their group after wins against USA, United Arab Emirates and Malawi, and they beat Burkino Faso and Uruguay in the knock-out stage before losing to the hosts. Spain's under 16 side took part in an international tournament in France in October, López Caro's side finishing third after picking up four points in all. The youngsters beat Italy 1-0 in their opening game, but then lost 2-1 to Holland and finished with a 2-2 draw against the hosts. (01.11.09)
