Atlético Madrid's poor start to the season continued, Abel Resino's team only managing to draw 0-0 against Cyprus's APOEL Nicosia. The little-fancied visitors actually had the better chances before the break, with Charalambidis in particular bringing a good save out of Sergio Asenjo and then firing another chance wide.
Atlético only really put visiting keeper Chiotis to the test with a couple of long range efforts from Diego Forlán after the restart, the keeper tipping a couple of shots around the post and watching as another pile-driver came back off the upright. Coming after a disappointing beginning in the league, the home fans registered their protests after the final whistle.
