Real Madrid kicked off this season's Champions League with a 2-5 win over FC Zurich. By half time the match appeared to be over after Pellegrini's side raced in to a three goal lead, Cristian Ronaldo starting things off with a free kick which Leoni couldn't quite reach. A mis-kick from Higuaín after Cristian Ronaldo headed on Pepe's long ball sett up Raúl for a record 65th Champions League goal and Higuaín scored the third himself after Raúl returned the favour.
The Swiss side came back however in a two minute period midway through the second half, ex Osasuna midfielder Margairaz converting a penalty after Alphonse fell theatrically under a challenge from Casillas, and Aegerter ghosting in to head Vonlanthen's corner wide of the keeper. And it was not until injury time that Madrid wrapped things up with a second Ronaldo free kick which Leoni inexplicably punched in to his own net, and a fifth goal from Guti who beat the offside trap to run on and lob the stranded keeper.
