Atlético Madrid took a big step towards a second consecutive year in the Champions League after beating Panathinaikos 2-3 in the first leg.
Asenjo had to save from Cissé early on and Salpingidis had a goal disallowed, but otherwise Atlético were on top. And with ten minutes to go to half time Forlán pulled down a long ball from Raúl García and set up Maxi to score the opening goal.
Two minutes in to the second half however Salpingidis caught a sleepy defence off guard to lob Asenjo and equalise, but Atlético pulled themselves together and Agüero missed an easy chance before Forlán restored the lead after Maxi's shot came back off the bar.
Soon afterwards Agüero won the ball off Moom in midfield and ran on to make it three. That just about wrapped things up, although a late goal by Leto gave the Greek side an outside hope for the second leg in six days' time.
