Racing Santander are safely
in to the league stage of the competition after a single goal victory in
Helsinki. Defending a slim one goal lead on an artificial pitch, coach Juan
Ramón Muñiz wasn't taking chances, and he put out a strong line
up. It was youngster Edu Bedía who put them ahead though in only the
third minute, turning the ball back past the keeper after a deflected shot from
Pinillos came back off the bar.
Pereira could have extended
the lead before the break when he shot wide with the goal at his mercy, but
Toño had to make important saves from Kokko either side of half time.
Juanjo could have wrapped things up later on when he headed Bedía's
cross wide of the mark, but with Honka then needing to score three to turn the
scoreline around it wasn't needed. Euro-Racing were through, and their first
ever participation in Europe will continue on for another four games at least.
