Deportivo could only draw
0-0 in their opening game against Hajduk Split, and they now need at least a
score draw in the return leg to qualify for the first round of the competition.
Coach Miguel Angel Lotina had to change his plans after Lafita went down with
appendicitis shortly before kick-off, Guardado coming in for his first official
start of the season. But against a side who have already started their league
programme they were unable to make many inroads, new signing Aranzubia called
into action a couple of times early.
Zé Castro headed just
wide from Filipe's free kick later in the first half, but Rubil and Ticinovic
both went close either side of half time. Gradually though the Croatia side
pulled back to defend the result, and Lotina brought on Omar Bravo and Xisco to
strengthen his attack. Guardado and Sergio both brought saves out of Subasic,
and Riki and Bravo both had chances later on. But Hajduk held fast, and Depor's
only consolation was that they didn't allow in an away goal. Whether that is
enough will be decided in Split in two weeks' time. |
