Cup winners Valencia have
the edge on league champions Real Madrid going in to the second leg of the
Spanish Super Cup after a 3-2 victory in the Mestalla stadium on Sunday night.
The opening match of the domestic season was preceded by the display of the
Euro 2008 trophy, with the two teams containing seven players from the winning
Spanish squad. Not all were starting though, Marchena out injured for Unai
Emery's side, and Sergio Ramos being left on the bench by Schuster after an
extended holiday break.
Valencia started well,
Casillas in action early on to keep out David Villa. But it was Madrid who took
the lead with just under a quarter of an hour gone, Van Nistelrooy controlling
a long pass from De la Red and beating Hildebrand with an angled shot. Alexis
headed just wide and Silva hit the post at the other end before the break
though. And the Ches turned the scoreline around in a three minute period early
in the second half, Silva stepping over Albelda's cross to allow Mata to fire a
shot past Casillas and the young forward then crossing in for Villa to head
past his Euro 2008 team mate.
Schuster turned to Robben,
and the Dutch winger revitalised Madrid's attack, crossing in almost
immediately for Van Nistelrooy to beat Hildebrand again to equalise. But
Valencia weren't going to throw it away, and Casillas and Ramos had to clear
from Silva and Villa before Vicente picked up a return pass from Silva and
battled past Heinze to score the winner with ten minutes to go. A high-scoring
start to the season, and everything is set up for a thrilling return leg in the
Bernabeu next Sunday. |
