Spain have been knocked out of the Confederations Cup! A surprise defeat against USA left them without the much-expected final with Brazil, and ended an unbeaten run that stretched back to 34 games and over two and a half years. Despite dominating early on, Del Bosque's side fell behind on the half mark when Villarreal's Jozy Altidore fired in a shot which Casillas could only turn in to the net off the post. And with a quarter of an hour to go Piqué and Sergio Ramos were both unable to clear Donovan's cross and Dempsey turned the ball in to an empty net. The run of fifteen wins in a row had ended, and all that is left for Spain is a disappointing third place play-off on Sunday. (24.06.09)
