Confederations' Cup

Spain 1 - Iraq 0

Spain kept up their record run of victories with a 1-0 win over Iraq, although it was hard going against an ultra-defensive and well organized opponent. Veteran coach Milutinovic knew that the best chance of a result was to pack his defence, and with Zahra alone up front they prevented their opponents from a look at goal until Villa shot wide midway through the first half.

After the break though Spain made more headway, Villa bringing a good save out of Kassid before finally steering a header past the keeper from Capdevila's cross. Iraq were forced to open up a bit, and Xabi Alonso and Torres could both have added to the lead later on. In the end though Villa's 30th of his international career decided it, and with his side already qualified for the semi-finals Del Bosque can rest some of his key players for the last group game against hosts South Africa.
