Second division - day 24

Xerez kept up their push for promotion with a 2-1 victory over Salamanca on Sunday lunchtime. Momo gave the Andalusians the lead in the tenth minute, but scores were levelled when Calle put through his own net early in the second half. The striker made up for it though with the winning goal a few minutes later. Tenerife stay in second spot, three points behind the leaders, after beating Elche 3-2 later in the evening. Luna put the Canary Islanders ahead before the break, but goals from Rubén Pérez and David Fuster turned the scoreline around. However Nino equalised again and Ricardo struck the winner from a free kick with a quarter of an hour to go.

Zaragoza stay in third spot, but only ahead of Castellón and Rayo Vallecano on goal difference after both won their respective matches on Sunday. Goals early in the first and second half from Gari Uranga gave Castellón a 2-0 win over struggling Alicante. And Rayo Vallecano beat Alavés 0-2, with Pachón and Jofre the scorers in the first half. The defeat leaves the Vitoria based side further down in the relegation zone, a bad start for new coach Javi López who took over from Mandiola this week. (15.02.09)

Zaragoza are up to second in the table after a 2-0 victory over Las Palmas. Songo'o headed in a Jorge López corner early on and set up Ewerthon after the break for the second, taking his side to within three points of leaders Xerez. Hércules are just a point outside of the top three after a 4-2 win over Levante. Tena gave the visitors a fifth minute lead, but Delibasic equalised soon afterwards. A Sendoa strike and a Farinós penalty after the break put the locals two up, and although Rubén got one back, Abel wrapped things up late on. A set-back for Real Sociedad though, who lost 2-0 at Murcia. Mejía and Sikora got the goals in the last three minutes to get their side back to winning ways.

Down at the bottom of the table, Eibar recorded their first win in two months, beating Huesca 2-0 to move to level with neighbours Alavés. Córdoba stay three points above them though after a 0-2 win at bottom club Sevilla Atlético. Albacete looked like they were moving clear of the danger zone when they led Girona by two clear goals with a few minutes left on the clock, but the Catalans came back to level it at 3-3. And Gimnàstic and Celta also cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw which left both floundering in mid-table. (14.02.09)
