Transfer rumours

Just typical, isn't it? Give somebody in Spain 30 days to do something, and you can be sure they will do it on the last day! Might just as well open the transfer window for one day, and say to everyone, OK, today's the day to do the lot, and that's it!

Of the 52 signings this month (probably the lowest on record), no less than 20 were registered today. Real Madrid themselves were one of the late movers, agreeing a 6 month loan deal with West Ham United's Faubert after other options fell through.

Betis finally got their man, club owner Manuel Ruíz de Lopera having to get a local bank to reopen on Saturday afternoon to pay Zaragoza the €9 million fee. to bring back Oliveira. And Espanyol got half of what they wanted, Iván Alonso agreeing terms to join but the move for Ahumada falling through at the last minute.

The window is now closed, and no further moves will be allowed this season, except in the case of long term injuries or players who are unemployed. (01.02.09)
