Champions League, day 5

Real Madrid and Villarreal join Barcelona in the last sixteen after both did just enough to qualify. Real Madrid won 0-1 at a freezing cold BATE Borisov, an early goal from Raúl enough to see them through. And Villarreal held Manchester United to a 0-0 draw for the second time this season, despite ending with ten men after Capdevila was sent off for a foul on Cristian Ronaldo late on. Barcelona tied up top spot in their group the following day with a 2-5 victory at Sporting Lisbon, Henry, Messi and Bojan amongst the goalscorers. And Atlético Madrid made it four from four for Spanish sides in the last sixteen after beating PSV Eindhoven 2-1 in a match played behind closed doors. (26.11.08)

Sporting Lisbon 2 - Barcelona 5

Barcelona had already made sure of a place in the last sixteen on day four, and they tied up top spot in their group with another big win over Sporting Lisbon. Messi was back in the side after resting at the weekend, and he set up Henry for the opener with under a quarter of an hour gone. And four minutes later they were two up when Polga put through his own net from Piqué's shot. Messi got the third after a quickly taken Alves free kick four minutes in to the second half, but Veloso and Liedson scored two in a minute to narrow the gap. A minute after that though Caneira scored in his own goal, and Bojan completed the rout from the penalty spot later on. (26.11.08)

Atlético Madrid 2- PSV Eindhoven 1

Atlético Madrid completed the clean sweep for Spanish sides with one match still to go after beating PSV Eindhoven. The game was played behind closed doors following crowd trouble in the tie against Olympique Marseille, but the lack of fans didn't stop Simao taking advantage of some slack defending to open the scoring in the thirteenth minute. Maxi drove home the second following Simao's corner on the half hour mark, but Koevermans got one back just a couple of minutes after the restart. After that there were some nervous moments, but in the end it didn't matter as Marseille had lost at Liverpool. (26.11.08)

BATE Borisov 0 - Real Madrid 1

Real Madrid are through to the last sixteen of the competition after beating BATE Borisov 0-1 on a cold night in Belarus. Zenit's draw against Juventus earlier in the evening meant that they could wrap things up with a game to go, and Raúl put them on track when he picked up Drenthe's cross to open the scoring with only seven minutes gone. And after that they were never really in trouble, holding on to join Juventus as the two sides from group H who qualify for the next round. (25.11.08)

Villarreal 0 - Manchester United 0

Villarreal drew 0-0 against Manchester United for the second time this season, ensuring their place in the next round draw with a game to go. A defeat against the English side coupled with a win for Celtic would have meant a difficult visit to Glasgow for the last match, but a professional performance saw them through. It was not without difficulties though, Diego López tipping a first half shot from Cristian Ronaldo on to the bar, and Pellegrini's team ending with ten men after Capdevila was sent off for a foul on the Portuguese forward late on.
