Copa del Rey, fourth round, first leg

Minute by minute goalscorers

Real Madrid followed in the footsteps of Villarreal and Sevilla, losing 3-2 to second division B side Real Unión on Thursday evening. Higuaín and Saviola twice cancelled out strikes by Juan Domínguez, but Goikoetxea won it for the Basque team in the end. There was concern though for Madrid midfielder De la Red, who is under observation in hospital after collapsing on the pitch early on. (30.10.08)

An extraordinary result on Wednesday night, with Villarreal getting thrashed 5-0 by second division B side Poli Ejido. Jorge Molina scored a hat-trick and Raúl Torres and Nakor got the others as Pellegrini's side all but bowed out of the competition. That was not the only surprise of the day though, Sevilla also losing 1-0 to another 2B side Ponferradina. On-loan Racing Santander defender Cristian Portilla got the only goal in injury time.

Racing Santander were the only other first division club to lose as it happens, Javier Clemente's Murcia coming from a goal down to beat them 2-1. Valencia had no trouble though seeing off the only surviving third division team Portugalete, Morientes scoring twice in a 1-4 victory. And Atlético Madrid beat Orihuela 0-1, Diego Forlán getting the only goal on the stroke of half time.

First division sides largely came out on top in the duels against 2A rivals, with Ogbeche scoring twice as Valladolid hammered ten man Hércules 1-5. Deportivo beat Elche 0-2 with goals from Riki and Bodipo, and Betis won by the same result against Castellón, the returning Edu one of their scorers. Solari got both goals for Almería in a 1-2 victory at Rayo Vallecano, and only Espanyol faltered, drawing 2-2 against Celta with Callejón and Valdo on target for the Catalans.

There were four all first division ties, Athletic Bilbao getting a head start on Recreativo with a 2-0 victory, Ion Vélez and David López the goalscorers. Sporting Gijón won 0-1 at Numancia in the match between two of the newly promoted sides, and the other two games ended all square, Málaga and Mallorca drawing 1-1 and Getafe and Osasuna ending without goals. Real Madrid visit Real Unión in tomorrow's only tie, and the return legs are in a fortnight's time. (29.10.08)

First division clubs enter the Spanish cup competition this week, with the tie between second division B's Benidorm and Barcelona brought forward to Tuesday night. Pep Guardiola put out a line up packed with reserve players, but his side were still able to win 0-1 thanks to a second half strike from Bojan. (28.10.08)
