Spain will have at least one club in the quarter finals after Villarreal beat Panathinaikos 1-2 on Tuesday evening. After the 1-1 draw in the first leg the odds were against Pellegrini's side. But they got off to a good start, Nihat and Rossi both having early shots blocked. Diego López was called upon though to save from Karagounis and Mantzios before the half time whistle.
Five minutes after the restart Ibagaza opened the scoring for the Spaniards after connecting with a cross from Capdevila. And although Mantzios levelled the tie five minutes later with a header from a corner, Llorente won it with a second goal after Ibagaza set him up later on.
