Real Madrid dropped out of the competition at the first knock out stage for the fifth season in a row after they were thrashed 4-0 by Liverpool on Tuesday night.

Casillas had to make first class saves from Fernando Torres and Mascherano before Fernando Torres opened the scoring on the quarter hour mark, Belgian referee Franck de Bleeckere waving away appeals for a previous foul.

And De Bleeckere was in the thick of things a few minutes later, ruling that Heinze had cleared the ball in the area with his upper arm rather than his shoulder, and awarding a penalty which Gerrard converted.

Madrid's first chance didn't come until shortly before the break, when Reina had to save an effort from Sneijder. But a couple of minutes after the restart Liverpool went three up, Gerrard running on to Babel's pass to drive a first time shot in to the roof of the net.

Raúl and Gago went close after that, but Casillas had to be on his toes to keep out Babel a couple of times before substitute Dossena made it four near the end. A humiliating defeat, and Juande Ramos's side now have to get their confidence back if they are to battle for the league title again this year.
