Atlético Madrid top their group on maximum points after a 2-1 win over Olympique Marseille. Once again Kun Agüero made the difference, pulling down Maxi's high ball and turning a defender before shooting low across Mandanda in only the fourth minute. Niang headed Bonnart's cross past Leo Franco ten minutes later to equalise, but Raúl García restored the lead a few minutes later, deflecting Pernía's wide free kick across the goal in to the far corner of the net with Agüero off the field receiving attention for a hard tackle which produced the free kick.
Niang came close to equalising again before half time with a lob which Leo Franco just pushed around the post, but Maxi almost caught out Mandanda with a clever back-heel after the restart, and Sinama-Pongolle forced the keeper in to another fingertip save after a quick passing move with Agüero. There were a few nervous moments near the end when Niang shot just wide and Taiwo headed a corner past the post, but Atlético had their second win, and can now face the double header against co-leaders Liverpool with more confidence.
