Atlético Madrid's return to Europe's top competition after a twelve year gap couldn't have been better, a 0-3 win over PSV Eindhoven leaving them top of what is a difficult group. Kun Agüero should have done better when he shot straight at the keeper in the opening minute, but eight minutes later he opened the scoring, turning Luis García's cross past Isaksson after Maniche had played the ball out to the wing. Soon afterwards though the Spaniards suffered a blow when Diego Forlán limped off with a hamstring injury, Sinama-Pongolle coming on to replace him.
Leo Franco was in action a few minutes later to save from Koevermans, but in the next play Sinama broke free down the wing and crossed in for Agüero to score his second of the night with an impressive shot on the turn. Early in the second half Franco was called upon again to tip over long shots from Méndez and Afellay, but then Simao won the ball in midfield and passed on to Luis García, who slipped the ball through for Maniche to score his side's third. Aguirre decided to rest Agüero and preserve the lead after that, and although Koevermans headed wide and Lazovic forced Franco into another save, the three points were already in the bag.
