Getafe are through to the
quarter finals of the UEFA Cup after beating Benfica for the second time in a
week. With ten players out through injury and suspension, Michael Laudrup was
forced to put out a makeshift side. But although the ex Valladolid, Sevilla and
Nàstic striker Makukula hit the post early on, Gavilán could have
put the locals ahead a couple of times before the break, Quim saving his first
effort and the side netting collecting his second.
Tena and Albín both
went close after the restart, with Rui Costa testing Abbondanzieri at the other
end soon afterwards. With twelve minutes to go however De la Red (playing in a
central defensive role after Belenguer failed a last minute fitness test) sent
Albín away for him to chip the keeper and wrap things up. It was a
disappointment for visiting coach Chalana, who only took over a couple of days
ago after José Antonio Camacho resigned, but Getafe were in to the last
eight, setting new standards for the club in their first ever season in Europe.
