A magnificent result for
Spain's only remaining representative Getafe in the first leg of the fourth
round, a 1-2 victory against Benfica in the Da Luz stadium giving them a big
advantage for next week's return match.
The game swung in the
Spaniards' favour early on when Cardozo was sent off for lashing out at
Belenguer in only the eighth minute, leaving José Antonio Camacho's side
with ten men. Rui Costa tested Ustari with a free kick and Pablo
Hernández brought a good save out of Quim at the other end, but midway
through the first half De la Red opened the scoring for Getafe with a shot
which took a deflection off a defender.
Pablo Hernández made
it two after the restart, curling a shot past Quim from outside of the area,
and the game seemed to be over. But Cristian Rodríguez hit the bar from
a yard out when it would have been easier to score, and with a quarter of an
hour to go substitute Montorras got one back for the hosts with a long shot
which bounced past Ustari. Casquero could have restored the two goal cushion
when he chipped just over the top near the end, but Michael Laudrup's side were
happy to return home with a victory under their belts. |
