Atlético Madrid had
to overturn a one goal deficit from last week, but with Agüero suspended
and Simao and Raúl García injured they were unable to break down
a well ordered defence. Jaaskelainen was rarely troubled in the visiting goal,
and Bolton had the best chance of the first half, a shot from Giannakopoulos
which Abbiati tipped over the bar.
After that though the
English side sat back to defend. Maxi had a shot blocked, Forlán missed
with a header and Luis García failed to hit the target with a couple of
efforts either side of half time. Aguirre threw on extra fire power to no
avail, and Atlético had a couple of penalty appeals turned down by the
referee for a possible hand ball by Samuel and a possible foul on
Forlán.
As the clock ran down even
Abbiati came up to join the attack, but there was no way past Megson's solid
wall. Atlético's long campaign since they qualified via the Intertoto
Cup was over, and now they only have the league to look forward to. It was too
much some of the more radical local fans, and there were some unpleasant scenes
as fighting broke out between two rival groups of local supporters.
