Villarreal are out of the
competition on the away goals rule despite a 2-1 victory over Zenit on the
night. Pellegrini's side started well, with Cazorla, Rossi and Tomasson all
trying their luck. But they were caught out on the half hour mark when
Lombaerts got in front of Diego López to head a high ball into the path
of Pogrebnyak who turned the ball into the net for his second goal of the tie.
The Russian side were left
with ten men just a couple of minutes in to the second half when Shirokov
picked up a second booking, but although Rossi and Tomasson went close again,
they were unable to beat Malafeev until substitute Guille Franco headed Nihat's
corner down past the keeper with a quarter of an hour to go.
A few minutes later visiting
coach Dick Advocaat was sent off for protesting, and when Sirl was also shown a
second yellow card Zenit were down to nine. Tomasson put the home side ahead on
the night after a shot from Pires was cleared off the line in the last minute,
but by then it was just too late to get that third goal that they needed.
