Getafe were the only one of
the three remaining Spanish clubs to get anything out of the first leg after a
1-1 against AEK Athens, and they will be flying the flag alone after they won
3-0 and the other two were knocked out. The star of the game was undoubtedly
Contra, who agreed to play even though he received news that his father had
died of a long illness a few hours before kick off. The Romanian full back had
a hand in all three goals, scoring the second himself from the penalty spot ten
minutes from the end.
Neither side produced any
real chances until De la Red tested Moretto on the half hour mark, but on the
stroke of half time Granero gave his side the lead when he headed Contra's
cross down past the keeper. De la Red brought another good save out of Moretto
after the restart, but the Greek side only needed one goal to level the tie,
and Rivaldo and Lagos both went close.
With ten minutes to go
though Granero hit the bar with a free kick, and on winning the ball back he
was brought down in the area by Nsaliwa. Contra converted the spot kick, and
four minutes later set up Braulio for the third, even though his control from
Licht's cross was lacking. Michael Laudrup's side go on to play José
Camacho's Benfica in the next round, with the first leg at home.
