Atlético Madrid were beaten 1-0 by Bolton in a controversial match, with Agüero being sent off after allegedly spitting at an opponent just minutes after coming on as substitute, and the English club scoring the only goal a minute later.

Aguirre had decided to give his star striker a rest, with Mista partnering Forlán up front. The early chances fell to the home side though, Abbiati having to keep out an header from Taylor in the opening minutes and then seeing another effort from the forward hit the post.

Antonio López brought a good save out of Jaaskelainen at the other end, but otherwise the Spanish side didn't cause too many problems for the local keeper before the break. Just eight minutes in to the second half though Forlán almost put his side ahead with a long shot which hit the outside of the post.

The turning point came though in a three minute period with twenty minutes to go. First of all Simao limped off with an injury, and then referee Rasmussen sent off Agüero at the instances of his linesman after spitting at the ground, the linesman considering that it was aimed both at himself and at a local player.

With the team still in disarray, Bolton took advantage to score a minute later. Taylor headed a cross from Giannakopoulos towards goal, and between Pablo and Cléber they could only deflect it as far as Diouf, who fired a shot back into the net. It was enough to win the match, and Atlético now have an uphill battle to turn things around in a week's time.
