Villarreal beat Lorenzo
Serra Ferrer's AEK Athens 1-2 to stay ahead of their rivals and finish top of
group C. With his side already sure of a place in the knockout stage,
Pellegrini decided to rest several of his key players. Rossi was back though
after an injury lay-off, and the ex Manchester United striker tested Macho a
couple of times before Mavuba picked up a return pass from Mati
Fernández to score his first goal since his move to the club in the
summer.
Silva missed an easy chance
to equalise after the restart, but Mati Fernández hit the bar with a
free kick at the other end, Fuentes somehow failing to turn the ball in from a
yard out after the rebound was played back to him. Soon afterwards Rivaldo
showed that he still has a bit of the old flair with a free kick which went in
off the post, but just a minute later Tomasson raced through on to another Mati
Fernández pass to score what was to prove the winner. |
