Villarreal moved to the top of their group after a 2-0 victory over Elfsborg. Tomasson gave them the lead as early as the second minute, turning a cross from Nihat underneath keeper Wiland. Nihat went close a couple of times and Cygan had a shot saved and then drove the rebound against the bar, but the Swedish side could have equalised when Avdic hit the post with a long shot on the stroke of half time.

A few minutes after the restart though Tomasson got his second of the night with an angled shot past Wiland after Mati Fernández set him up. And he should have had his hat-trick near the end after he fell under a challenge from Wiland inside the area, the keeper doing well to turn his spot kick round the post. A minute later Wiland frustrated the Danish striker yet again, but the game ended soon afterwards and Villarreal were through to the next round.
