Second division - day 26

Numancia extended their lead at the top of the second division after beating Hércules 2-1 on Sunday lunchtime. All the goals came in a ten minute period midway through the second half, with Julio Alvarez firing home the winner after Jaume had equalised Toché's opener. The Soria based side are now five point clear of Málaga, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Eibar later in the evening. Baha gave the Andalusians the lead in the second half, but Altuna saved a point for the locals near the end. Tenerife are now seven points off the top three though after a 1-0 defeat at Salamanca, Quique Martín scoring from the penalty spot to take his side within a point of the Canary Islanders.

Racing Ferrol moved out of the relegation spots after a 0-2 win over struggling Xerez, with Alvaro and Pereira scoring two in a minute around the half hour mark. Gimnàstic drop back into the bottom four after they drew 1-1 at bottom club Poli Ejido, youngster Quique saving a point for the locals in injury time after Calle had given the visitors a first half lead. And Alavés stay a point clear of the drop zone after drawing 2-2 against Granada 74, Aganzo and Raúl Sánchez twice levelling the scores after Elvis and then Luque had put the Andalusians ahead. Sporting Gijón moved back into the top three after a 1-2 victory at Albacete on Saturday evening. De Lucas put the Asturians ahead in the first half and Noguerol turned Sastres cross into his own net with ten minutes to go before Alustiza got a last minute consolation for the home side. The result cost the job of local coach Quique Hernández, who was fired soon after the end of the match. Sporting move ahead of Real Sociedad on goal average after the Basque side drew 0-0 at Elche. It took a good performance by local keeper Caballero though to save a point which keeps David Vidal's side two points behind their opponents in the table.

Sevilla Atlético could have joined Sporting and Real on 42 points had they beaten Pepe Murcia's Castellón in the last game of the evening, but in the end they too drew 0-0. Celta drop four points off the promotion spots though after a 1-0 defeat at Las Palmas. Trashorras got the only goal in the eighth minute, and Santamaría saved a last minute penalty to ensure the Canary Islanders a win which takes them out of the bottom four. Elsewhere Cádiz came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Córdoba, Natalio and De la Cuesta levelling the scores after Cristian Alvarez and Pineda had given the locals the lead. (23.02.08)
