UEFA Cup, third round, second leg
The success of Spanish sides
in recent seasons in the UEFA Cup doesn't look like continuing this year. Only
Getafe are left in the tournament after Atlético Madrid
and Villarreal were knocked out, and they have a difficult tie against
José Camacho's Benfica in the fourth round.
Getafe had drawn
their first leg tie 1-1 against AEK Athens, and they went ahead when
Granero headed in Contra's cross on the stroke of half time. Contra added a
second himself from the penalty spot after Granero was fouled with ten minutes
to go, and Braulio scored again to make it 3-0 before the end.
Atlético Madrid
had to overturn a one goal deficit from last week, but with Agüero
suspended and Simao and Raúl García injured they were unable to
break down a well ordered Bolton defence. Jaaskelainen was rarely
troubled in the visiting goal, and there were incidents between rival groups of
home fans during the game.
Villarreal had also
lost their first leg by a single goal to Zenit, and they went further
behind when Pogrebnyak beat Diego López on the half hour mark. The
Russian side had two players sent off after the break, but goals from Guille
Franco and Tomasson came too late to prevent them from being knocked out on the
away goal rule. (21.02.08) |
