Copa del Rey, fifth round, second leg
Real Madrid are out
of the cup after losing 0-1 to Mallorca on Wednesday night. Bernd
Schuster's side needed to overturn an adverse result from the first leg, but
although they had many chances they were unable to beat an inspired
Moyà. And with a few minutes to go Ibagaza ran through to lob Dudek and
take his team through to the quarter finals.
Atlético Madrid
are in to the last eight on the away goal rule after drawing 1-1 at
Valladolid. Agüero ran on to a Luis García pass to give the
visitors the lead soon after the restart, but Llorente equalised later in the
second half, and the game ended in controversy after the referee turned down a
last minute penalty claim by the home side.
The game between
Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao went to penalties after a 1-1 draw
between the two sides. Luis García scored for the Catalans early on but
was sent off soon afterwards, and Iraola equalised near the end. David
López missed the first penalty for the Basque side, but Lola and
Torrejón also missed at the other end, taking the visitors through 3-4.
Extra time was needed at the
Madrigal stadium, where Villarreal went through in the end after a 2-0
win over Recreativo. Marcos Senna soon cancelled out Recre's one goal
lead from the first leg, and Rossi got the winner on a quick breakaway in the
first half of extra time. Rossi then missed a penalty, but Cáceres
almost put the Andalusians through when he hit the bar near the end.
Racing Santander's
good form continues, and they reaced the last eight after beating
Zaragoza 4-2. Oliveira gave new coach Ander Garitano hope of a good
start with an early goal, but strikes from Tchité and Oriol turned the
scoreline around at the break. Serrano made it three midway through the second
half, and although Milito got another one back, an injury time Garay penalty
wrapped things up.
Valencia are in to
the next round after a comfortable 2-1 win over Betis, a result which
takes some pressure off Ronald Koeman. Zigic added to his side's first leg lead
when he beat Castro with a header early on, and Vicente got a second before
Juanito headed one back with a quarter of an hour to go.
Getafe make up the
quarter final draw after they cruised through 4-0 on aggregate against
Levante. Three from the first leg virtually sealed the tie, and
Gavilán picked up an assist from Nacho to make it 0-1 on the night.
Michael Laudrup's side will play Mallorca, with the first leg in Madrid next
week. (16.01.08)
Barcelona are the
first club through to the quarter finals after knocking out defending champions
Sevilla on the away goal rule. The Andalusians had to score in the Nou
Camp after the 1-1 draw in the first leg, but Frank Rijkaard's side defended
well and the game ended 0-0. Barça will play the winner of the match
between Villarreal and Recreativo in the next round, with the first leg taking
place next week. (15.01.07)
