UEFA Cup, league stage, day 5
All three Spanish sides
ended the group stage at the top of their groups after the last day of the
league stage. Atlético Madrid came back from a goal down to beat
Panathinaikos 2-1 in the last minute. Salpingidis cut through the
defence to put the Greek side ahead late in the first half, but Luis
García picked up an assist from Agüero to equalise with a quarter
of an hour to go. And although Raúl García was sent off soon
afterwards, Simao won it with an injury time free kick.
Villarreal were also
facing a Greek side, Serra Ferrer's AEK Athens, and they too won 1-2 to
stay ahead of their rivals. Mati Fernández set up Mavuba to open the
scoring before the break, but Rivaldo made it all square midway through the
first half with a well struck free kick. A minute later though Tomasson raced
through on to another Mati Fernández pass to score the winner.

Getafe sit proudly on
top of their group after beating Anderlecht 2-1 on Wednesday night.
Michael Laudrup's side only needed a draw to qualify for the next round, but
Pablo Hernández gave them the lead in only the sixth minute with a shot
which went in off a defender, and Celestini scored a spectacular second from
Manu's cross soon after the restart. Théreau headed one back in injury
time, but too late to change the result. (19.12.07) |
