Champions League, day 6

Real Madrid join Barcelona and Sevilla in the knock out stage after a comfortable 3-1 win over Lazio, the victory ensuring them top spot in their group. Baptista, Raúl and Robinho got the goals in the first half, with Pandev replying for the Italians late on. Valencia are out of Europe though after a 0-0 draw at Chelsea. Ronald Koeman's side needed to win and hope that Schalke didn't to reach the UEFA Cup spot, but in the end results didn't go their way. The following day Sevilla made sure of first place in their group after beating Slavia Prague 0-3, with Luis Fabiano, Kanouté and Alves scoring in the second half. Barcelona had already tied up top spot in their mini-league, but they came from behind to beat Stuttgart 3-1 with strikes from Giovani, Eto'o and Ronaldinho.(11.12.07)

Slavia Prague 0 - Sevilla 3

Sevilla made it three out of four Spanish sides to take first place in their group after beating Slavia Prague 0-3. It was not until Luis Fabiano came on early in the second half that they got going though, the Brazilian forward picking up a pass from Maresca to open the scoring within minutes of making his appearance, and then setting up Kanouté for a second soon afterwards. Daniel Alves wrapped things up with a third goal from Duda's assist in the final minutes to make it five wins out of five, the best performance by a rookie side at the league stage in the history of the competition. Barcelona 3 - Stuttgart 1

Barcelona had already tied up top spot in their mini-league, but they came from behind to beat Stuttgart 3-1 and finish the group stage unbeaten. Antonio Da Silva caught out Jorquera with a third minute free kick which came off the bar and went in off the back of the second choice keeper, but Giovani equalised later in the first half, deflecting Ronaldinho's shot past Schäfer with his upper arm. Eto'o made it two after the break with his first goal since returning from a long injury lay-off, and Ronaldinho got on the end of Sylvinho's cross to score his side's third a few minutes later. Real Madrid 3 - Lazio 1

Real Madrid had no problem picking up the point they needed to qualify, and a 3-1 win over Lazio ensured them of top spot in their group. Within a quarter of an hour they were two up, Baptista crashing a long shot past Ballotta and Raúl heading down past the keeper from Robinho's cross. And Robinho himself added the third before half time after a passing move with Van Nistelrooy. The Italian side got a late consolation when Pandev turned in a wayward shot from Rocchi with ten minutes to go, and they could have had another when Casillas saved a last minute Rocchi penalty after Pepe had handled in the area. Chelsea 0 - Valencia 0

Valencia started the game at Chelsea knowing that they had to win to have any chance of even making third spot and a place in the UEFA Cup, but it was not to be and the Chés' European campaign is over this season. Only a great performance from Cañizares saved them from defeat, the veteran keeper stopping several efforts before the break and pushing a shot from Joe Cole onto the post after the restart. Kalou also hit the bar in the second half, and Valencia's only real chance came on the stroke of half time, when Cech had to keep out an angled shot from David Villa. (11.12.07)
