Champions League, day 4
A disaster for
Valencia at the start of day four, a 0-2 defeat at the hands of
Rosenborg leaving them bottom of their group. Real Madrid though
are closer to qualifying after a 0-0 draw at Olympiacos. Better results
for Spanish sides on Wednesday though, with Barcelona on the brink of
reaching the last sixteen after beating Rangers 2-0, and Sevilla
also close to going through after a 0-2 victory at Steaua Bucharest.

Barcelona 2 - Glasgow Rangers 0
Barcelona are almost
certain of a place in the next round after a 2-0 win over Glasgow
Rangers. After the scoreless draw two weeks ago, Frank Rijkaard wanted an
early goal, and he got his wish when Henry bundled the ball over the line in
the sixth minute after Messi headed across Ronaldinho's cross. And by half time
they were two up, Messi driving a shot back past McGregor after the keeper beat
out a shot from Ronaldinho two minutes before the break. Xavi and Messi went
close after the restart, but after that Barça relaxed and Novo almost
got a late consolation with a shot which Valdés kept out in the last
minute. (07.11.07) .
Steaua Bucharest 0 - Sevilla 2
Sevilla are also
close to going through after beating Steaua Bucharest 0-2. Renato missed
an easy chance for the Andalusians before he opened the scoring midway through
the first half, turning the ball in from close up after Zapata could only push
out Poulsen's header following a corner. And Poulsen and Kanouté came
close to extending the lead as the Spanish side dominated the first half. Badea
could have equalised early in the second half when he had a strike ruled out
for a dubious offside, but almost immediately Sevilla worked a quick passing
move which ended with Renato diving low to head home Jesús Navas's
cross. (07.11.07)
Valencia 0 - Rosenborg 2
Valencia are
virtually out of the Champions League after a 0-2 defeat against
Rosenborg. Ronald Koeman was in charge of the Chés for the first
time, but although his side went close several times early on, they fell behind
when Iversen beat Hildebrand with a shot on the turn on the half hour mark. And
Kone could have scored for the visitors a couple of times before Iversen got
the second, the ex Tottenham striker heading in to an empty net after
Hildebrand had misjudged a corner. It could have been worse after Kone hit the
post and then had a late effort saved by Hildebrand, but as things stand
Valencia will have to beat Schalke at home and Chelsea away to have a realistic
chance of going through to the last sixteen. (06.11.07)
Olympiacos 0 - Real Madrid 0
Real Madrid picked up
another point in a fairly dull goal-less draw against Olympiacos, and
they move a step closer to qualifying as a result. Bernd Schuster's side had
the better chances in the first half, Raúl and Van Nistelrooy both
hitting the woodwork. And although Lua Lua and Galletti missed chances after
the restart, Sneijder could have won it with a late effort which Nikopolidis
saved. Madrid ended the day on eight points, and one more victory will see them
through. (06.11.07) |
