Champions League, day 2
Wins for Barcelona and
Sevilla in the first matches of day two. Barcelona beat Stuttgart
0-2 to top their group on maximum points. And Sevilla won 4-2 against
Slavia Prague to open their account in the Champions League. Results
were not so good the following day though, Real Madrid being held to a
2-2 draw at Lazio and Valencia throwing away a one goal lead to
lose 1-2 to Chelsea. (03.10.07)
Lazio 2 - Real Madrid 2
Real Madrid drew
their second match 2-2 at Lazio, a result which keeps them joint top of
the group together with Olympiacos. Van Nistelrooy gave them the lead in the
eighth minute, turning Sneijder's wide free kick past Ballotta. But the Italian
side had a couple of chances before Standardo headed into the path of Pandev
for him to volley home the equaliser. Casillas was called upon soon after the
restart, but a few minutes later Raúl slipped the ball through for Van
Nistelrooy to run on and chip the keeper. A quarter of an hour later though
Pandev got his second of the night with a low shot from the edge of the area,
and that's the way it stayed. (03.10.07)
Valencia 1 - Chelsea 2
A set back though for
Valencia, who threw away an early lead to end up losing 1-2 to
Chelsea. Silva went close for the Spaniards before David Villa latched
on to a rebound outside the area and steered a shot wide of Cech. But midway
through the first half Drogba and Malouda worked a one two through the defence
to set up Joe Cole for the equaliser. Joaquín tried his luck a couple of
times and Villa had a goal disallowed for offside early in the second half. But
with twenty minutes to go Drogba ran on to a long ball from Joe Cole to hold
off Raúl Albiol and beat Hildebrand. (03.10.07)
Stuttgart 0 - Barcelona 2
Barcelona head up
group E after a 0-2 win at Stuttgart. Frank Rijkaard's side started
strongly, with Deco hitting the post and Messi and Henry bringing good saves
out of Schäfer. But only a brilliant double save by Valdés from
Mario Gómez kept the scores level, and the Barça keeper had more
work to do either side of half time. The Catalans took the lead though when
substitute Puyol scrambled the ball home following a corner, and Messi made it
two a few minutes later with a shot which deflected in off a defender after
connecting with a cross from Henry. (02.10.07)
Sevilla 4 - Slavia Prague 2
Sevilla beat
Slavia Prague 4-2 to pick up their first points in the Champions League.
Kanouté started things off, the striker taking the ball round a kamikaze
Vaniak to curl a shot into the net. And although Pudil fired a pile-driver past
Palop to equalise, Luis Fabiano restored the lead after Kanouté flicked
on a ball out of midfield. A few minutes in to the second half Escudé
made it three, and Kone came on to get a fourth after Kanouté set him
up. And Kalivoda completed the scoring with a second goal for the Czech side in
injury time. (02.10.07) |
