UEFA Cup, first round, first leg

Mixed results for Spanish sides in the first round of the UEFA Cup. Two late goals from Luis García helped Atlético Madrid to a 4-0 win over Erciyesspor after Mista and Forlán had opened the scoring early on. And Villarreal beat BATE Borisov 4-1, with Nihat scoring twice and Senna and Tomasson also hitting the target. Getafe had to wait until the last minute though in their first ever European appearance before clocking up a 1-0 win over Twente, Uche getting the only goal for Michael Laudrup's side. And Zaragoza also have some work to do in their second leg after losing 1-0 to Aris Salonica, Papadopoulos heading the only goal in the opening minutes following a free kick taken by Spanish youth international Toni Calvo.
