Atlético Madrid lost their first leg match to Gloria Bistrita, although an away goal scored by Seitaridis early in the second half gave them hope of overturning the result in the Calderón stadium in a week's time. The Romanian side took the lead in only the sixth minute when Zaharia beat Leo Franco after Tilinca headed on a long clearance, and Tilinca himself took advantage of slack defending to score the second himself shortly before the break. Up to that point only a couple of headers from Maxi and Antonio López had caused any problems for Albut, but the local keeper could not prevent Seitaridis from pulling one back with a long shot which went in off the bar in the opening minutes of the second half.
