Valencia are this season's
cup winners after they beat Getafe 3-1 in the Vicente Calderón stadium
on Wednesday evening. It was another blow for the Madrid based side, who lost
last season's final to Sevilla and were cruelly knocked out of the UEFA Cup by
Bayern Munich only six days ago, and the Ches will be in Europe next year after
their first cup title since 1999.
Ronald Koeman's job was on
the line in this match after a string of poor results, but, facing his old
Barcelona "dream team" team mate Michael Laudrup, his side raced in to a two
goal lead with only ten minutes on the clock. Mata opened the scoring when he
headed in a David Silva cross after Villa had set the winger free down the
flank, and Alexis made it two with another header from Villa's corner soon
afterwards.
Getafe made themselves a
couple of chances after that though, and Granero gave them hope when he
converted a penalty on the stroke of half time after Moretti brought down
Contra inside the area. De la Red just failed to get on the end of a dangerous
Granero free kick soon after the restart, but Villa had a penalty appeal turned
down, and then went close a couple of times, running on to Baraja's long ball
to shoot wide, and then turning Tena before firing in a shot which Ustari
pushed over the top.
Granero came close to
equalising when he cut across the front of the area and curled a shot against
the bar, and Hildebrand did well to keep out headers from De la Red and
Braulio. But with six minutes to go Morientes reacted quicker than his marker
to head the ball past Ustari after the keeper could only parry a fierce free
kick from Baraja. It was too much for the men in blue, and their frustrations
were clear when Celestini got himself sent off for a hard tackle on David
Silva. |
