Atlético Madrid
qualified for a major European competition for the first time in seven years
after winning through their Intertoto Cup final on the away goal rule. After a
defeat in Romania last week, Javier Aguirre asked Kun Agüero and Diego
Forlán to delay their holidays to play in the return leg, both having
prolonged the season playing for their countries in the under 21 World Cup and
the Copa America respectively.
The move paid off when
Forlán got on the end of a poor clearance by Rusu to open the scoring in
the eleventh minute, virtually his first touch of the ball for his new side.
Agüero went close and Maniche hit the post before the break, and
Agüero could have increased the lead after the restart had he not failed
at the final hurdle after a long run.
Gloria didn't really trouble
Leo Franco at all, although there were still some nervous moments in the second
half before the referee blew the final whistle. Atlético now go in to
the draw for the last qualifying round of the UEFA cup, and will know who their
opponents will be in the next few days. |
