Sevilla are out of the
Champions League after losing to Fenerbahçe in a penalty shoot out. The
Andalusians appeared to be on their way to victory when two mistakes by keeper
Volkan Demirel allowed an Alves free kick and a long shot from Keita into the
net in the first ten minutes, overturning the 3-2 defeat from the first leg.
Kanouté could have
added to the lead with a long shot wide of the mark, but with twenty minutes
gone Deivid got one back after Aurelio's corner came out to him, his shot
finding the net through a crowded goalmouth. Volkan saved from Luis Fabiano
soon afterwards, and after Alex and Vederson had gone close, Kanouté
restored the two goal cushion after controlling an Alves cross on his chest
before firing in a shot which deflected into the net off the foot of Gonul.
Zico's team only needed one
to level the tie though, and Poulsen had to clear off the line from Edu before
the break. Then with eleven minutes to go Deivid got his second of the night,
running the ball into the net after Palop had deflected his previous effort on
to the post to take the game into extra time and then penalties. Sevilla treid
to draw on the spirit of last season's UEFA Cup final when they beat Espanyol
on the shoot out, but Volkan changed from villain to hero with three penalty
saves to take the Turkish side through. |
