Real Madrid still need a
point in their last game after losing 3-2 at Werder Bremen on day five. Within
four minutes they were behind when the limping Fritz crossed in for Sanogo to
chest the ball over to Rosenberg, who bounced a shot past Casillas. And
although Robinho picked up a pass from Marcelo to curl a shot past Vander to
equalise ten minutes later, Sanogo got on the end of Rosenberg's cross to
volley a spectacular shot past the keeper and restore the lead before the
break.
Both keepers were in action
soon after the restart, Vander saving from Van Nistelrooy and Raúl, and
Casillas stopping a Sanogo header, Ramos clearing the danger with two forwards
closing in. Van Nistelrooy missed the easiest of chances after Robinho set him
up, and a few minutes later Hunt ran on to a long ball from Jensen out of
midfield to put the German side further ahead.
With twenty minutes to go
Van Nistelrooy did beat Vander, the Dutch striker picking up a pass from Guti
and appearing to have lost it before chipping a shot back over the keeper from
wide out. But they could do no more, and Casillas had to save from substitute
Carlos Alberto to prevent his side from going further behind. It was another
defeat for Madrid in Germany, where they have only won once in 22 visits, and
they now need to draw against Lazio in their last match to go through.
