Real Madrid top their group
at the half way stage after beating Olympiacos 4-2, although it took an
inspired performance by Robinho to save the day after his side fell behind. The
young forward had been left out of the weekend game after returning late from
international duty, the press full of stories of wild parties in Brazil. But
Schuster pardoned him for this match, and within two minutes he won the ball
back in midfield and sent Van Nistelrooy away. Nikopolidis stopped the
striker's shot, but Raúl was there to drive home the rebound.
The lead only lasted five
minutes though before the Greek side equalised, Djordjevic outstripping Salgado
and crossing in for Galletti to beat Casillas. But five minutes later the Greek
side were left with ten men when Torosidis was sent off for pulling down Van
Nistelrooy as he advanced on goal. Madrid were unable to take advantage
however, a shot wide from Guti and another effort from Marcelo which the keeper
saved their only attempts of note. And just two minutes after the restart they
were caught out again when Julio César got on the end of Djordjevic's
free kick to give the visitors the lead.
The fans started to give
their players a hard time, but Robinho levelled the scores with a header down
past Nikopolidis from Sergio Ramos's cross, and then won a penalty after a
series of step-overs ended with Patsatzoglou kicking a lump out of him. Van
Nistelrooy sent the spot kick way over the bar, but Robinho was there again
with four minutes to go to pick up Van Nistelrooy's reverse pass and poke the
ball into the net. It was still not over, Casllias being called upon to make a
couple of brilliant saves from Nuñez and then Kovacevic, but in the
third minute of injury time Robinho broke away from midfield and passed in for
substitute Balbao to score a fourth. May the parties go on forever!
