2-0. 61. Riseth. Header wide of keeper after Marchena failed to clear
corner.
Another blow for Valencia,
who are out of the qualifying spots after losing 2-0 at Rosenborg. The
Norwegian side had not won at home in their last ten Champions League games,
but they had the better chances in the first half with Koné and Iversen
going close.
The Spaniards were missing
David Villa, the striker aggravating an injury in the warm up, but they started
to pick up the pace, with Gavilán shooting just wide before the break
and Joaquín bringing a good save out of Hirschfeld soon after the
restart. However a couple of minutes later Dorsin cut in from the left wing and
set up Koné for him to beat Cañizares, the keeper getting a foot
to the ball only to see it trickle over the line.
Worse was to come, and eight
minutes later the locals added a second following a corner which Marchena could
only head down into the ground, the ball bouncing up to Riseth who headed it
into the back of the net. Valencia tried to get back after that, Silva putting
in a dangerous cross or two and Zigic heading a good chance just wide. But
Rosenborg held on for a classic victory which takes them up to second in the
table behind Chelsea.
Despite the defeat though
the Spanish side are not out of the running, only one point behind their
opponents of the night and level with Schalke (below them on goal difference
but ranked above them due to the head to head score). Quique Flores's side have
home matches against both to come, and wins in the Mestalla stadium could still
see them through. |
