Second half goals from Luis Fabiano and Kanouté, both set up by Jesús Navas, got Sevilla off to a good start in their first ever appearance in the Champions League. The Andalusians were let off the hook though when Julio César hit the bar for AEK Athens late on.

Juande Ramos had to put out a makeshift line up due to late injuries to Antonio Puerta and Adriano, youngsters Fazio and Diego Capel being drafted in to the side. Both though put in sterling performances as Sevilla dominated the first half, with Capel in particular failing to beat Moretto on a double occasion close to half time.

Juande decided to make two changes at the break though, and it couldn't have worked out better as Kanouté and Navas combined to set up Luis Fabiano just two minutes after the restart. A great run by Navas a few minutes later allowed Kanouté to add a second, and Fazio could have had a third had he not shot straight at the keeper when free on goal.
