Espanyol will play Werder
Bremen in the semi-finals after a nail-biting 0-0 draw at Benfica. The
Portuguese side only need a single goal victory to go through after the 3-2
result in the first leg, and although Pandiani curled a shot against the post
early on, for the rest of the match the Catalans were on the back foot. Simao
fired a shot just wide of the post, and Gorka had to make important saves from
Nuno Gomes and Miccoli before half time.
That was only the beginning
though, and the keeper had to be at his best to stop a close range effort from
Gomes on the line after the restart as the locals continued to push forward.
Miccoli hit the post, as did Rui Costa with a well struck free kick soon
afterwards, and Mantorras headed another good chance wide near the end.
But Valverde's side held on,
and they could even have won it had referee Claus Bo Larsen not turned down
Luis García's clear penalty appeal near the end. Twelve months to the
day after they won the Copa del Rey, Espanyol are once again on the hunt for
silverware. |
