Defending champions Sevilla just scraped through to the quarter finals by the skin of their teeth, winning 2-3 against Shakhtar Donetsk in one of the most exciting games of the year. Needing to score after the 2-2 draw in the first leg, Juande Ramos's side were on top throughout the first half. Luis Fabiano brought a couple of good saves out of Shust before the keeper pushed a shot from Adriano against the post, and Maresca fired an effort just over the bar shortly before the break.

However just three minutes after the restart an incredible scorpion kick by Matuzalem put the Ukrainians ahead, and although Maresca levelled the scores when he guided a header in off the post, Elano appeared to have won it for the locals when he charged half the length of the pitch to fire an angled shot past Palop.

Sevilla attacked desperately, Shust making a series of saves as the Spaniards pinned their opponents back in their own area. But with the game in the fourth and final minute of injury time Palop came up for a corner, and Alvers found him with a perfect corner for the keeper to direct a header into the net and take the game into extra time. The locals were gobsmacked, and with the first half of extra time coming to an end Chevantón latched on to Luis Fabiano's through ball to squeeze a shot past Shust and wrap things up.
